Janet Lynn Hollingsworth
December 6th, 1962 - August 13th, 2018
Janet Lynn (Yocom) Hollingsworth was born on December 6, 1962 to Frances Jean (Woodside) Yocom and Deryl Aurin Yocom in Aurora, Colorado. Deryl was in the Army so from birth, Janet grew up along side her older brother Michael moving all around the United States and even overseas in Turkey and Germany. When her father was discharged in 1967, they moved to Seattle, Washington. After Janet and Michael finished the school year, the family relocated to Edmonds, Washington. In 1971, Janet became a big sister when they welcomed her younger brother Mark. Throughout her elementary school years, she discovered a passion for music and her church youth group. In high school, she joined the marching band playing flute. It was also in high school that she discovered her love of traveling and was active in the high school youth group at Edmonds Presbyterian Church. Her junior year of high school brought exciting times including being trapped in Spokane during a band trip when Mt. Saint Helen’s blew up. During college, she studied travel and tourism intending to become a flight attendant or travel agent. While she studied, she worked on campus in the Shoreline Community College library. Janet discovered her passion for library science as well. After graduating with her degree, she met Don Hollingsworth Jr. through a mutual friend. They were true soulmates and married on October 6, 1984. Two years later, they welcomed their first born and daughter Amanda Lynn on December 14th. Four years later, 1991, they completed the family with the birth of their son Charles Andrew on June 12th. While raising her two children, Janet kept active in many activities. She continued to be active in the church, helping with VBS, youth groups, serving as both a deacon and elder, joining Women’s Association, as well as being involved in the choir. She was also a very hands on mother, volunteering in her children’s preschool classes, and elementary school years. If that wasn’t enough, Janet also helped people live with Crohn’s Disease or Colitis and Irritable Bowl Disease. She was a big voice and part of a online support group for those affected . Janet had been dealing with said diseases since she was eighteen. Janet was a huge fan of both Disney and Harry Potter. She was a proud Hufflepuff. She was always kind, fiercely loyal and ready to help. Janet always had a smile on her face, and a sense of humor. Family, friends, and faith in God were her rock. In February of 2018, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 rectal cancer. Despite this, she fought hard and did it her way going for a month long trip in June to California. There she visited Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Parks, SeaWorld, Universal and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, as well as spending time with her best friend from childhood, Terri in San Diego. Janet passed away quietly on August 13, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents Deryl and Fran Yocom. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Don Jr., her daughter Amanda Shirk (Michael), son Charles, older brother Michael (Leslie), younger brother Mark (Diane), and three nieces, Erin Strand (Matthew) , Anna, Laura, three nieces from marriage (Sara, Alana, Audrey), one nephew from marriage (Jesse), and three grandchildren (William, Katherine, Elizabeth Shirk), and two great nieces, Madeleine Strand and Magnolia Strand. In lieu of flowers, Janet requested that donations be made in her honor to PAWS or Edmonds Presbyterian Church.
