Charles T. “Chuck” Newton, 87, of Westminster, CO passed away January 17, following a brief illness. Chuck, a native Denverite, born March 14, 1927 to Charles H. and Lois Grimes Newton (of Athens, GA) lived and was schooled with his only sibling, sister Sidney Newton Moorhead, in the East Capitol Hill area. Chuck was Head Boy at East High in 1943-44 and was active in track and basketball. Chuck, as one of the “Greatest Generation”, served in the Army until his honorable discharge in 1947. He was a Chief Non-Commissioned Officer in the surgical pavilion at Camp Hood, Texas and also played on the Army travelling basketball team. After completing his Army service he continued his education at the University of Colorado, Boulder, eventually becoming President of the fraternity Beta Theta Pi and meeting his first wife, Eleanore Grannell. Later, he served as a President for both the University of Colorado Buffalo Club and the Denver area Alumni Association. During his marriage to Eleanore they had six children: Tom Newton (Kathy), Lu Kinard, Chip Newton (Heidi), John Newton (Jody), Mary Peterson (Craig), and Jennifer Newton. In addition to the six children, Chuck had 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He built their home in East Denver’s Crestmoor neighborhood and enjoyed successful careers as a Partner of B & N Bindery and Denver Golf & Tennis. While in his last career in the office furniture business, he met his second wife, Joan. They married May 4, 1980, and enjoyed the addition of Joan’s four children: Steve(Laura) Mendez, Dave Mendez, Laura (Darryl) Meduna, Scott Mendez and eventually three more grandchildren. They took pleasure in an active life of golfing, dancing, traveling overseas, cruise trips and houseboat vacations to Lake Powell. They also shared a hobby of renovating investment properties, one of which became their winter home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is a beloved husband, brother, father, grand and great-grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. He touched our lives with his bigger-than-life kindness and warm humor. Donations in honor of Chuck Newton can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
