Alfred Wilbur Swinyard, age 93, of Venice, died on September 30, 2008. He was born in Logan, Utah on June 13, 1915, and moved to Venice from Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1976. In 1999, he became a resident of Village on the Isle in Venice. His education included a B.S. from Utah State University in 1937, an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School in 1939. He also received a Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1955. Mr. Swinyard served in the US Army in World War II including three years in the China- Burma- India Theater where he was awarded a Bronze Star. He was discharged in 1946 as a Lt. Col. From 1946 to 1957, Mr. Swinyard was Professor of Marketing and Chairman of the Marketing Department for the College of Business Administration at Syracuse University. Between 1957 and 1962, he was the Director of Management Research for the firm of Booz, Allen and Hamilton. After 1962, he taught at the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Michigan and retired from there as Professor Emeritus and Associate Dean Emeritus. Mr. Swinyard was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the American Marketing Association, Beta Gamma Sigma, Alpha Kappa Psi, Sigma Chi, the Harvard Club in Sarasota, the University of Michigan Club, and a former member of the Venice Yacht Club. Surviving family members include his wife of 67 years, June Hanson Swinyard, of Venice; son Alfred W. Swinyard, Jr. of Clearwater, FL; daughter Suzanne S. Hanselmann of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren Matthew A. Swinyard, Michael J. Swinyard, Frederick H. Hanselmann, Peter A. Hanselmann, Eric W. Hanselmann, and Christian M. Hanselmann; and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers William O. Swinyard of Salt Lake City, Dr. Ewart A. Swinyard of Salt Lake City, and Dr. Chester A. Swinyard of Menlo Park, CA. A family service with burial was held at Venice Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Village on the Isle Scholarship Fund, 900 South Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL 34285. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements.
