Jack D. Lane, 91, of Venice, Florida formerly of Branson, Missouri passed away February 16, 2022. Jack was born January 6, 1931, in Winslow, Indiana. He is survived by his wife Betty; son Jack Lane and wife Pam; stepdaughter Kim Benson and husband John and stepson Scott Carduner and wife Sandy. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather Helen and Cecil Richardson, and stepbrothers Robert and Richard Richardson. Jack was President of Robotic Integrated Systems Engineering, Inc. He had many accomplishments throughout his career. He was a professor and Assistant Department Head of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Robotics Center at GMI Engineering and Management Institute in Flint, Michigan, where he taught courses in manufacturing Engineering, welding engineering, automation, and robotics. He has a BS in metallurgical engineering from Wayne State University and an MS in manufacturing engineering from the University of Detroit. Prior to GMI, he worked as a welding development engineer for General Motors Manufacturing Development Division and as a welding test and development engineer for Chrysler Missile Division. Mr. Lane has authored many papers on various subjects associated with manufacturing automation, welding, robotic applications, and robotic safety and has considerable consulting and in-plant training experience on these topics. He presented many seminars on these topics and other specialized areas of automation in this country and in Europe for professional societies, General Motors, and other private organizations. He edited a book on ‘Automated Assembly’ and another on ‘Robotic Arc Welding’. He the American editor for ‘The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology’. Mr. Lane was a certified Manufacturing Engineer in Robotics and a Registered Professional Manufacturing Engineer. He is a charter member of the Robotics International Association and the Computer and Automated Systems Association of SME in addition to being a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the American Welding Society. He is the past chairman of the Assembly Division of SME and past and forming chairman of the Education and Training Division of Robotics International. He was also a past member of the board of directors and past vice president of the technical council of Robotics International. He was a member of the AWS-D16 committee on Robotic and Automatic Welding and a past committee member and a past corresponding committee member the ANSI/RIA R15.06-1999 committee for Industrial Robots and Robotic Systems – Safety Requirements. Mr. Lane was listed in ‘Who’s Who in the Midwest’, ‘Who’s Who in Technology’, and ‘Men of Achievement’. He has received the ‘Presidents Award for Outstanding Achievements’ from Robotics International and is a recent recipient of the International Joseph F. Engelberger Robotics Award. Mr. Lane has given expert witness testimony in several lawsuits involving Automation, Welding, Robotics, and Robotic Safety and is listed as an expert witness by the U. S. Department of Labor. He recently acted as a ‘Ghost Writer’ for the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (O.S.H.A.) in rewriting the O.S.H.A. ‘Robotic Safety Guidelines’ which were to replace those published in 1987.
