In loving memory of our dear mother, Opal Kress who passed away on July 4th, 2023 at the age of 99. Opal died in the arms of her daughter, at Bayshore Home & Garden, Nokomis, FL. Opal was born to William & Effie Stone on November 16, 1923 in Sylvania, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Lera Stone; 3 sisters, Hazel Wood, Margie Davenport, Polly Roden and 4 brothers, Creed, Floyd, Buck and Ray Stone and two step-sisters, Jean and Ardith and step-brother, Calvin Land. Her husbands Earl Wood died 1964 and Kenneth Kress died 1992. At the age of 19, Opal moved to Baltimore, Maryland and married Earl Wood. Opal attended Patricia Stevens modeling school and did some modeling while raising her children. She then worked at the Social Security Administration and retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1985. After retirement, Opal moved to Ocean Pines, MD and spent her winters in Venice, FL. Opal is survived by her son, James (Jim) Wood, her son, William (Jerry) Wood and daughter-in-law, Peggy Wood, and her daughter, Cheryl Wood Hawes and her husband, Richard Hawes. She is also survived by her grandsons, Keith, Troy (Chrissy, deceased), Eric (Kimberly) and Ryan. Her great grandsons, Cody (Haley) Jacob and Jordan, Spencer and great granddaughter, Audrey. She is survived by great, great grandchildren, Bentley, Cayley, and Lainey. She is also survived by 3 step-daughters, Jennifer Matosziuk, Melissa Hawes and Kristina Smith Hawes and 3 step grandchildren, Riley, Lily Matosziuk and Cole Smith (aka, little boy). Her sister, Faye Straub, sister-in-law, Sue Stone, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her greatest joy in life was her family. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her children as well as her grandsons, and great grandchildren. Opal enjoyed gardening, boating, fishing and golf. Opal was a fabulous mother, a doting grandmother and great grandmother. She was a wonderful friend to her adult children and to other’s that had the privilege of knowing her. She will be sorely missed. She will be eternally loved. A visitation will be held at Farley Funeral Home, 265 S. Nokomis Avenue, Venice, FL 34285 between 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11, 2023. Services will be held the next morning at 11:30 at the Venice Memorial Gardens, 1950 Center Road, Venice, Fl. Interment to follow.
