Mamie Cathron Bolton
December 23rd, 1912 - September 16th, 2018
Mamie Cathron Bolton, born December 23, 1912 at Oak Ridge, Virginia to Jesse Franklin and Venie Wright Bolton, died Sunday, September 16, 2018, at Heartland of Lynchburg at the age of 105. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Jessie B. Smoot and brothers Withers F. Bolton and John A. (Alec) Bolton. Mamie and her older sister Jessie left high school before graduation in order to help the family during the Great Depression. Their three younger siblings were forever grateful for the sacrifice they made for them. Both went on to establish successful careers with telephone companies in Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D. C. Mamie retired in 1974 as a Service Representative with Verizon at the Public Office in Washington. She also worked part time weekday evenings at the Wall Street Journal. Mamie loved people and enjoyed entertaining family and friends as long as she was able to maintain her home. She was very creative, making all of her clothes, cross stitching beautiful gifts, and making dozens of unique Christmas ornaments to give away every year. She was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church until declining health required her to give up many of her activities.Mamie will be missed by her sisters Rebecca Rosser (Beckey) of Lynchburg and Florence Brown of Richmond, special nieces Mary Cathron Brown and Cathron Anne Campbell of the Richmond area, by many other nieces and nephews and by her devoted friend Thelma Ford.A memorial service will take place in the chapel at Virginia Memorial Park, 11490 Forest Road, at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 29, conducted by Anne Gibbons and Deacon Chris Barrett. The family will be present 30 minutes before the service to receive visitors.The family is grateful for the care given to both Mamie and Beckey during almost 8 years she resided at Heartland of Lynchburg, to Senior Independence hospice care for their compassionate support for the last several months, and to Anne and Chris for returning to Lynchburg for the memorial service.
