John Brewer

John Floyd Brewer, age 87, of Drennan, Colorado passed away September 2, 2013 at the Laurel Manor Care Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Floyd was born July 20, 1926 to Charles S. Brewer and Pearl Theodora (Akers) Brewer Smith. He was one of eight children. Floyd was raised in Squirrel Creek, Colorado and was a 1944 graduate of Drennan High School. At the age of seventeen, Floyd joined the Navy with his Mother’s consent. He joined the fight in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1948. On June 1, 1948, Floyd married Lois Irene Smith in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Aside from living in Colorado, Floyd and Irene spent the first 31 years of marriage in El Dorado Springs, Missouri where the family owned and operated a dairy farm. While living in Missouri, the couple was blessed with their three children, Terresa, Ted and Jona. During this time, Floyd served as a member of the El Dorado Spring School Board, was a member of the National Farmers Organization and was awarded the Outstanding Dairyman Award of Missouri. During this time Floyd also established a career working at Sac Osage Electric Cooperative in El Dorado Springs, Mo. In 1979 he continued the remainder of his career at Mountain View Electric in Limon, Colorado. Following ten years in Limon, Irene and Floyd retired to the Drennan Community where they remained very active and lived out the remainder of their years. Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Lois Irene (Smith) Brewer, parents, Charles and Pearl Brewer Smith; his stepfather Wyman Smith; two sisters, Nadine Flint and Mary Lee Smith; one brother, Gaylord Smith; nieces Melissa Widhalm, Joyce Speed and Virgia Brewer and nephew Tommy Wands. Floyd is survived by son Ted (Janice) Brewer of Calhan, CO; daughters Terresa (Rick) McPheeters of Ozark, MO and Jona (Les) Layton of Limon, CO., brothers Charles (Ethel) Brewer of Ramah, CO., Thomas (Hazel) Brewer of El Dorado Springs, MO. and Wesley (Juliet) Brewer of Beulah, CO. Floyd is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. with the funeral service being held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September the 7 at the Hanover Church, 17480 South Peyton Hwy, Colorado Springs, Co. 80908 (corner of S. Peyton Hwy. & Hanover Rd.) In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Drennan Community Building Fund and may be directed to Arleta Crandall 1505 Kingsley Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80809. All Veterans Funeral and Cremation of Colorado Springs will be handling the arrangements for John Floyd Brewer.
