Sarah Helen Huskins Smith, a longtime resident of the Columbia, SC area, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 20 at the Agape Hospice House on Stoneridge Drive. Born in 1936 in Marion, NC, Helen graduated from Chester High School in Chester, SC in 1954 and completed two years of study at Winthrop University from 1954-1956. Helen had a long career in the banking industry which she began at South Carolina National Bank in Aiken, SC in 1976. She retired 26 years later in 2002 from Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo) in Columbia, SC. Helen loved music and was a talented piano player, starting at the age of 8. Her favorite musical artists included Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. She also had a flair for writing, and once won a St. Patrick’s Day poetry contest. Cooking was another area in which Helen excelled. She had a sunny disposition and was always thoughtful of others. She is survived by her brother, John Huskins of Chester; two sons, Scott Smith and Hal Smith of Columbia; and two grandsons, Roger Smith and Steven Smith, who live in the San Diego, CA area. A third son, Alan Smith of San Diego, died in 2014. Thompson Funeral Home, 200 State Street, West Columbia, has been entrusted with arrangements, where visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019.
