Richard Korecki
March 23rd, 1949 - September 14th, 2019
On Saturday, 14 September 2019, Richard Joseph Korecki passed away at the age of 70 in his home in Denver. Richard was born on March 23, 1949 in Jersey City, New Jersey to two loving parents, Joseph and Adele (Sanecki) Korecki. His artistic and loving sister, Barbara, was born 2 years later in 1951. Growing up he was active in sports including baseball, football, and surfing on the Jersey Shore. As a senior in high school, Richard answered his Nation’s call and joined the United States Marines Corps in 1967. He served a 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam receiving the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Richard pursued his education and graduated from Rutgers University in 1974 and later from Vermont Law School in 1977. Following his adventurous spirit, Richard left the East Coast behind and drove to Alaska where he lived and worked as an attorney for the State of Alaska. Richard had his fill of the long dark winters of Alaska and moved to Colorado, “the state that has the highest percentage of sunshine.” While in Colorado, Richard met and married Ruth Seiler, who is the mother of their only child, J Richard Tyrus (named after Ty Cobb). Richard opened his own law practice as a criminal defense attorney in the heart of Denver. He continued his athletic pursuits playing and coaching softball. As a life-long fan of baseball, Richard closely followed and supported the evolution of professional baseball in the state of Colorado from the Denver Bears to the Denver Zephyrs, and eventually to the Colorado Rockies. He was also an avid football fan and attended as many Denver Bronco games as he could at Mile High Stadium. Together, Ruth and Richard raised Tyrus in Denver. Richard coached Tyrus’ little league teams and never missed any of his son’s NCAA boxing matches. Following his father’s example, Tyrus graduated from the United States Air Force Academy, and went on to fly MC-130Js as a pilot in US Air Force, serving three deployments to Afghanistan as a member of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). Richard loved his son and family more than words can describe. In addition to his career as an attorney, Richard enjoyed planting, arranging, and displaying flowers. He had a passion for writing and had some of the most beautiful handwriting. He sent journals to his sister filled with beautifully written stories of his own creation. Not only did Richard appreciate the beauty of nature, but also the splendor of art. His home was full of items that he gathered and enjoyed over the years. Richard had the wonderful ability to listen intently, and he was able to make people appreciate themselves for the wonderful individuals that they were. Richard truly cared about his fellow man. He made friends easily, and he gave of himself whenever he could. He was well respected and loved in the law community and in the community of friends and family he had made throughout the years. Richard is preceded in death by his mother and father, Joseph and Adele. He will be truly missed by his son, Tyrus, Tyrus’ mother, Ruth, his sister Barbara and her husband Ken. Please join the family in a celebration of this wonderful man’s life at the Denver Athletic Club in the Centennial Room on the 30th of October 2019, from 3-5 pm.
