Donald Leo Haynes
October 19th, 1934 - July 7th, 2015
Donald Leo Haynes, Jr., 80, of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 7, 2015. He was born October 19, 1934 in Florence, SC and was the son of the late Donald Leo Haynes, Sr. and Sarah Marie Haynes. Don graduated from McClenaghan High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He was employed with Southern Bell for many years and retired from AT&T. Don served honorably in the U.S. Army including a tour in Nuremburg, Germany. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed attending their many school and athletic events. He was a fiercely loyal Gamecock fan and enjoyed following the USC baseball team, especially the two recent National Championships. Survivors include Marianne Allen Haynes, daughter Pam Haynes Gross (Lee); sons, Donald Leo Haynes III (Susie) and James Ellyson Haynes (Judy); Grandchildren, Evan (Taylor) Haynes, Ellys Haynes (Kayla), John Eric Haynes, Copeland Haynes, Jennie Haynes, Lee Stroud, Lindsey Stroud, Paige Dixon, Kenny Dixon, Elly Gross, Jessy Gross; two great grandchildren, Owen Ellyson Haynes and Mia Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents; a daughter, Jean Haynes Stroud; grandson, Braden Allen Haynes; and brother, Harold Bruce Haynes. A visitation will be held at Thompson Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia SC, 29209 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015. A memorial service will be held at Thompson Funeral Home on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. There will be a private burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial donations be made to the W.W. King Academy Athletic Booster Club, 1046 Sardis Rd, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29006.
