GASTON-A memorial service for Betty T. Hammonds, 64, of Gaston, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Reverend Elton Mishoe will officiate. Mrs. Hammonds died Thursday, November 21, 2013. Born in Georgetown County, SC, she was a daughter of the late James Bright and Clara Elizabeth Cooper Tompkins. She attended Pleasant Hill High School and was a 1984 graduate of Horry-Georgetown Technical College where she received her degree in nursing and was Student Body President. She loved spending time with her family and going to the beach. The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. He shall enter into peace; they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness. Isaiah 57:1-2 She is survived by her husband, Henry Bernie Hammonds of Gaston; daughters, Sonya Joye McConnell (Johnny Oneal) of Gaston and Katrina Joye West (Donald) of Knoxville, TN; six grandchildren, Mark Anson Strickland, II, Joshua Allen McConnell, Michael Joseph McConnell, Robert Gabriel Jordan Hoffman, Katie Elizabeth McConnell and Jeremy West; and one great-grandchild, Isabella Clarice Lail; sisters, Jane Cribb of Hemingway, Reba T. Rogers of Hemingway and Gladys T. Pipkin of Branchville; and brothers, Robert Lee Tompkins of Kentucky and James Bright Tompkins, Jr. of Florence; and her kitty cat Maggie; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Maldon Joye; brother, James Edward Tompkins; and sisters, Margie Ann Tompkins and Mabel Tompkins.
