Sidney Cave Gaines, Sr. went to his eternal home on June 8, 2012. He was born July 27th 1927 in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of the late Marion Little Gaines and Eloise Cave Gaines. Mr. Gaines attended Snyder Elementary, Hand Junior High School, and graduated from Dreher High School. Mr. Gaines was a Naval Aviation Cadet, honorably discharged in 1947. He attended Georgia Tech, Hampton Sidney, Duke University, and graduated from USC with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation he owned and operated Heavy Duty Haulers, Wavco Inc., and M. L. Gaines, Inc. Mr. Gaines worked with his father at ML Gaines, Inc. They designed and provided utility construction for numerous development projects in the Columbia area. After the death of his father he continued with the company until his retirement. Mr. Gaines was a lifelong member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church. Mr. Gaines is survived by his daughter Margaret Gaines and her husband Bill Phillips, of Blacksburg, VA, son Sidney Cave Gaines, Jr. and his wife Dana, of Marshall, MN, and four grandchildren; Gaines Richmond, Grace Richmond, Addison Gaines, and Meredith Gaines. Extended family includes Beth and Jim Goodyear and Thurmond and Merle Saylor. The family would like to thank exceptional caregivers Patricia Arnold and Robert Turner. He was predeceased by his parents, daughter Elizabeth (Libby) Gaines Vigil and sister Marion Gaines Saulsbury. Services will be held graveside at Greenlawn Memorial Park at 6:00 pm on Monday, June 11, 2012. Visitation will follow immediately at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers family requests donations of remembrance be made to the Veterans organization of your choice, the Gideons, or Mayo Clinic.
