Reverend Darrell Payne Wood
June 21st, 1939 - February 13th, 2018
Reverend Darrell Payne Wood, 78, of Columbia went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 13, 2018. He was born in North Carolina to the late Otis Darrell (O.D.) and Amanda Payne Wood. He grew up in Roanoke, Virginia where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Anne Dressler. He served in the United States Navy before returning home where he and Anne were married in March of 1963. He began his ministry by enrolling in Shenandoah Bible College in Roanoke, VA. It was at Shenandoah that God allowed him to meet and begin his long ministry as a student under Dr. Frank Sells. In 1967, God led him to move to Columbia, SC to continue as a student of Dr. Sells and attend Columbia Bible College where he graduated in 1971. He was thankful to serve as the interim pastor of Alta Vista Baptist Church in Columbia while finishing Bible College. He then went on to serve as the pastor of Congaree Baptist Church in Gadsden, SC, Fairview Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA, and then Palmetto Baptist Temple where he retired after 32 years. He loved doing yard work, spending time with his family & church, and helping those in need. In his later years, he also took up running. He especially enjoyed spending time in his library studying God's word. He loved and spoiled each of his children and grandchildren as much as he was able. His consistent, selfless devotion to his wife "Honey" was a testimony to all who knew him. In addition to his loving wife of 54 years, Anne, he is survived by his children, Annette (Steve) Faber of Greenville, S.C., Donna (Scott) Coombs of Cayce, S.C., Teri (Dan) Garard of Charleston, S.C., Darrell (Bethany) Wood of Columbia, S.C., Amanda (Matt) Cropsey of Lexington, S.C., Rachel (Phil) Rogers of Milledgeville, GA., and Rebekah Wood of Lexington, S.C.; a sister, Beth (Larry) Carter of Roanoke, VA., and brother, Mike (Paula) Wood of Chattanooga, TN.; a sister-in-law, Dottie Thomas of Roanoke, VA., and brother-in-law, Ralph (Melinda) Dressler of Birmingham, AL.; 20 grandchildren: Joseph, Daniel, Will, Kaylee, Stephanie, Clay, Eric, Ethan, Jayson, Reecie, Darrell, Ella, Lucie, Matthew, Anna, Caroline, Maggie, Noah, Greyson & Chloe; and 2 great-grandchildren: Carson & Millie. In addition, he is also survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 15, from 6-8pm, at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. A memorial service will take place on Friday, February 16, at 11:30 am at Grace Baptist Church of West Columbia with Dr. Jim God officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Serenity Gardens. Memorials may be made to Blythewood Baptist Church or Grace Baptist Ministries Youth building project.

We Entrusted Reverend Payne Wood's Care To
Greenlawn Memorial Park
Greenlawn Memorial Park is one of Columbia's most historic perpetual care cemeteries. This gorgeous setting combines serenity, natural beauty, and diligent care for generations of families. North Lake, located in the center of our park, offers a water feature and is the site of many local events, including an annual Easter sunrise service, a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. The park also has a veteran's section, private family estates, a columbarium with niches for cremated remains, and an incredible granite mausoleum....
