Verna Sloan
July 20th, 1934 - December 7th, 2012
Verna Sloan, 78 of Westminster, CO. passed away peacefully in her home, on Dec. 7, 2012. Verna Langlois was born and raised in Spearville, Kansas. She went on to attend and graduated with her Nursing Certificate from St. Mary of the Plains College, in Dodge City, Kansas. After receiving her degree she moved to Denver and was employed at the V.A. hospital and St. Anthony’s Hospital. When she met her husband Joe Sloan, she was pleased he was tall, handsome, and Catholic. She and Joe were married on April 22, 1957, in Denver, CO. They were happily married for 52 years and Joe preceded her in death, passing away in August of 2009. She and Joe raised five children in Westminster. Verna was a wonderful mother. She was generous with her time and love. She was a great hostess, crafty, clever, and resourceful beyond belief. Verna enjoyed traveling often, and planned summer vacations for her family, visiting Glenwood Springs, Kansas, and many other places around the country. She purchased a small cabin the mountains for her family, where countless memorable weekends were spent together by multiple generations. In 1978 Verna returned to the nursing profession and worked at Lutheran Medical Center for 20 years, where she was a consummate caretaker for patients on the orthopedic floor. During free time, Verna loved spending her time sewing gifts for her family. Her signature creations were rocking horse quilts to welcome new grandchildren, and Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls to celebrate first birthdays. Verna was the “hostess with the mostess”, helping everyone feel welcome in her home. Delicious meals and welcome baskets always awaited her visitors. Verna’s most eager guests were her grandchildren. When they visited, you would find Verna playing cards, dress up, or taking them to the park. Verna was an incredible woman, she felt blessed throughout her life, and she treasured the simple things life offered, her family and her faith. Her legacy will live on with her family. She is survived by her brother Lyle Langlois, and her sister Nadine Swartz. She is survived by her children, Barbara (Don) Jordan, Carol Scheck, Bonnie, (Roger) Mauer, Brenda (Bryant) Walters, and Joe Sloan (Rose O’Donnell). She was honored to have fifteen grandchildren, Dustin (Dacia) Kardoes, Melanie Jordan (Jason Craig), Holly (Brian) Girten, Jenna Kardoes, Kelci Mauer, Elizabeth Walters, Emily Walters, Michael Jordan, Tessa Mauer, Erin Walters, Austin Scheck, Theresa O’Donnell Sloan, Aidan Scheck, Andrew Scheck, and Jack O’Donnell Sloan. She was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Rylee and Braeden Kardoes. We will be celebrating Verna’s remarkable life, Monday Dec. 17, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. Spirit of Christ Chapel 80th and Wadsworth, Arvada CO.
