Jossie de Vera

Jossie de Vera passed away peacefully on May 31,2024, with her loving family by her side.
Jossie was born on September 19, 1930, in General Trias, Cavite, Philippines, to Jose Jacinto and Doris(Trias). Jossie is survived by her son, Julius “JR” de Vera,(Laurie); her daughter, Jennifer Yeager (Jonny); her grandsons, Gabriel and Isaac; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Julius de Vera, Sr. and her son, John de Vera. Jossie was the eldest child and was also predeceased by her siblings Ching (Ben), Didsy (Mario), Tessie (Rene), and Jessie(Darlene).
In 1956, Jossie visited her Auntie Fely on the Monterey Peninsula. Though she was to join the convent upon return to the Philippines, Jossie fell in love with Julius de Vera Sr., soon married and immigrated to America. She cherished raising her family in Carmel and remained a devoted Catholic. She was the organist for many years at the Carmel Mission Basilica .
Jossie operated the Philippine Gift Shop in Carmel and also worked as a hostess at La Playa and Carmel Mission Inn. Jossie walked numerous picket lines to loudly support union hospitality workers. Julius and Jossie’s proudest moments were sponsoring and petitioning several family members and their children to immigrate to the U.S. and be part of the American dream.
Jossie was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed performing duets with her sister Didsy singing. Her love of music passed on to her children and grandchildren. Well into her 90’s, Jossie enjoyed playing piano for friends and family - lighting up the room .
Jossie stayed true to her beliefs with frankness, humor and spirit. She was a matriarch who fercely loved her family and the Golden State Warriors.
Viewing and rosary will be held on Wednesday, June12, from 4 - 7 pm at Mission Mortuary, Monterey. Funeral mass will take place at San Carlos Cathedral on Thursday, June 13, at 9:30 am.
The family would like to thank Jossie’s niece, Erna Clay, the staff at the Cottages of Carmel, and VNA hospice for their loving care.
