William James Downing, Sr., 62, of Denver, CO., born April 28, 1947 passed away on the frosty evening of December 1st, 2009. Though the graceful snowflakes of winter were bitter cold; the endless warmth of Bill’s heart and his love toward his family and friends will remain in our hearts forever. Bill Downing was a loving son and brother, a caring husband, a devoted father and a very special grandpa. Amidst all the new wonders of 1947, such as, The HOWDY DOODY debut, the first documented sightings of “flying saucers”, and a gallon of gas only costing 15 cents, the first son was born to James Clay and Mary Joy Downing. Two years later second son, Dick, was the final addition to the Downing family. Bill graduated from Ranum High School in 1965, where he then enlisted with the United States Navy. After completing his commitment with the Navy he returned to Denver with his first wife, Andrea McDonald Downing and son William James Downing, Jr. In 1971 Bill began his life career as a custom home painter. He also married his second wife, Barb Vahling Downing. Together they added son, Mitch and only daughter, Stacy, to the Downing family. In 1978 Bill and family headed west of Denver where together they battled the intense winters and savored the heavenly summers of the Colorado Rockies. Bill and Barb were married for 29 years. Bill was a loving father who is survived by his parents, children and 8 grandchildren. We love you and wish you the peace you deserve. The battle is over, victory has been won! We love you, Pop! Burial on Wednesday, 12/9/09 at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area “B”, 11:30 AM. Posted by All Veterans Funeral & Cremation.
