Ladean Alfred Overlie, 91, of Cloquet, died Sunday, May 29, 2011 in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton. He was born in 1920 in Carlton, the son of Lars and Mary Overlie. Ladean was raised on the family farm in Iverson and graduated from Carlton High School in 1938. He married Ellen Ouse on June 26, 1945 in Duluth and they celebrated 63 years of marriage before her death in 2008. Ladean graduated from UMD in 1942 with a teaching degree in social studies, history and a minor in math and then taught school in Barnum for one year. He served in the US Navy from 1943 - 1946 as a Lt. JG Gunnery Officer. After his discharge, Ladean graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1948. He was admitted to the bar in November of 1948 and joined a law firm in Cloquet that same year. Ladean became the Municipal Court Judge for Carlton County in 1951, the youngest municipal judge in Cloquet's history. In 1962, he was appointed 6th District Court Judge, a position he held until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet, Hebert Kennedy VFW Post 3979 and Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 and the Cloquet Library Board. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ellen in 2008; three brothers, Jim, Roy and Alvin Overlie; and brothers-in-law, Dean Ostroot and John (Rosella) Ouse. Ladean is survived and will be missed by his daughter, Joan (Brian) Lafontaine of Cloquet; two sons, Dean (Cindi) Overlie of Augusta, GA and Eric Overlie (Karyl Brod) of Woodbury; four grandchildren, Ben and Sam Overlie, Joel Lafontaine and Kate (Dustin) Mason; two great grandsons, Dane and Beau Mason; and two sisters-in-law, Leone Overlie and Mary Ostroot. The family would like to thank the staff of Inter-Faith Care Center and Peggy DeCaigney and Jim Boyd from Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Dad's last few years of life were made so much more comfortable and enjoyable because of your compassionate care and visits. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 12th and Doddridge, Cloquet. Memorials may be made to Inter-Faith Care Center, Our Savior's Lutheran Church or the National MS Society, 200 12th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55415-1255.
