Harry S. Weiss, Sr., 78 of Mahtowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2007 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Harry was born November 8, 1928 in Lastrup, MN to Hubert and Elizabeth Weiss. He grew up on a farm near Lastrup where he went to school. Harry was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Catholic Church in Lastrup. As a young man, he went to North Dakota for seven years to work in the fields. Harry was a World War II Army veteran from 1945 - 1947, serving for 10 months in Japan. He married Vera Bachman on March 9, 1950. Following his marriage, Harry farmed for a few years near Onamia, then moved to Duluth to work on the ore boats, followed by employment at Conwed Corp. and then he worked at Potlatch Corp for 35 years until retiring in October of 1989. Harry and Vera lived in Cloquet until 1972 when they moved to a farm in Mahtowa. Harry was a member of Local 128 at Potlatch, serving as committee man for several years and as Vice - President for one year, a member of Potlatch Quarter Century Club, was a member of American Legion Post 262 in Cloquet and Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church in Sawyer. Harry loved having a large garden from which he shared with family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, especially ice fishing, hunting, woodworking and walking to see his neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vera; two daughters, Bonita Weiss and Beverly Danger; and a brother, Edward Weiss. Harry is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Jim) Tuve of Cloquet and Brenda (Jay) Putney of Winthrop; two sons, Harry Weiss, Jr., of Grand Rapids and Donald (Suk) Weiss of Mahtowa; a son-in-law, Bob Danger of Mahtowa; two brothers, Richard (Pauline) Weiss of Harding and Leonard (Fran) Weiss of Duluth; two sisters, Mildred (Mel) Stoa of LaPorte, MN and Rosemarie (Bob) Skiba of Aurora, MN; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 in Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, Sawyer with burial in New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet.
