Edwin Ewald Kumpula, 97 of Menahga, MN died Sunday, September 17, 2017 in Greenwood Connections, Menahga. Ed was born December 4, 1919 in Sebeka to Kaleb and Henna (Wirkkala) Kumpula. He was raised in Meadow Township on the family farm and attended country school until the eighth grade. He married Diana Toini Linnea Typpo on June 1, 1952 in Cloquet. Ed started working at Potlatch in 1952 and retired in 1981. He was a member of the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church in Cloquet where he was one of the ministers and Finlandia Beach. He had volunteered for Meals on Wheels in Esko and Menahga and had taken care of the flower boxes at Greenwood Connections. Ed loved spending time with his grandchildren, taking trips both short and long, sharing conversations and visiting with people, traveling and woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Diana in 2004; siblings, Lila Spinelli, Melvin, Richard, Swante, Basil, Linda VonVett and his twin sister, Edna Keranen. Ed is lovingly survived by his daughters, Martha (Harold) Hanson of Duluth, Norma (Bradley) Hill of Cohasset and Elaine Kumpula (Dick Shrake) of Lakeland Shores; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; also by his sister, Agnes Lindroos of Menahga. Visitation will be Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm in the Atkins Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet and continue one hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. funeral service, Friday, September 22, 2017 in the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, 2502 Big Lake Road, Cloquet. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Van Buren Township. If preferred, memorials may be made to Salolampi Finnish Language Camp or the Meals on Wheels - Menahga Senior Center.
