Duane "Dewey" Davis
September 13th, 1920 - December 2nd, 2018
Duane "Dewey" Hewitt Davis, 98 of Mahtowa passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2018 in Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet. He was born September 13, 1920 Clear Creek, Wisconsin to Clair and Hazel Davis. He grew up in Mondovi and St. Paul where Dewey graduated from St. Paul Central High School in 1939. On August 29, 1942, Dewey married his high school sweetheart, Beatrice Thelin in San Francisco. He joined the Army and served his country during WWII. After his discharge in December of 1945 they made their home in St. Paul. Dewey received his bachelor's degree from the University of MN-Twin Cities in Electrical Engineering. He took a job with AT&T in Chicago where he worked for 33 years. After his retirement, they moved to Durham, NC for a short time before moving to Mahtowa in 1987. Dewey was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and wildlife. He was also very active in the Park Lake Association and worked with the DNR regarding lake issues. Dewey was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice; infant son and daughter, Phillip and Kathleen Davis; son, Duane "Dick" Davis; grandson, Evan Mueller Garrett; sister, Norma Schmugge; brothers, Lynn and Lowell Davis; and son-in-law, Frederick Mueller. He is survived by his daughter, Merikay Mueller Garrett of Mahtowa; son, Gary Davis of Carrollton, TX; five grandchildren, Phillip, Deborah, Karen, Jennifer and Katie; and 12 great grandchildren. Visitation: 1:00 until the 2:00 p.m. funeral service Friday, December 7, 2018 in Salem Lutheran Church in Mahtowa. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. Burial will be in Mount Salem Cemetery in Mahtowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Moose Lake Food Shelf.
