Roland Robert Uran
June 22nd, 1937 - January 8th, 2020
Roland Robert Uran, 82 of Esko died Wednesday, January 8th 2020 in his home. He was born June 22, 1937 in Northome, Minnesota, the son of Joe and Harriet (Felstet) Uran. He grew up surrounded by extended family and had many fond memories of those days spent with his cousins. Roland graduated from Northome High School and immediately began work as a laborer with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). This was the beginning of a 39-year career that would include stops in Bemidji, Mora and Duluth. His work leading a MnDOT survey crew in northeastern Minnesota brought him great joy and many life-long friends. Together, he and his crew laid out the path for many miles of roadway, including much of the scenic drive along the north shore of Lake Superior. After retiring from MnDOT in 1994, Roland spent time working for Salo Engineering. The outdoors is where Roland worked and where he most enjoyed spending his free time. Gardening, camping, hunting, and most of all fishing were favorite activities. He especially treasured time spent at the cabin on Little Hanging Horn Lake. Many wonderful memories were made while working on the property, swimming and fishing with children and grandchildren, and sitting around the campfire in the evening. Roland served his community as a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard, delivering Meals on Wheels for 15 years, and as a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church where he was involved as a trustee, elder, Sunday School teacher, and anywhere a helping hand was needed. He was a quiet, patient man who found his greatest joy when serving others in the name of the Lord. Roland was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy (Oslund) Uran; three children, Michael (Ronell Osladil) Uran, Susan (Clark) Jahnke, and Pamela Uran; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Rhoda Pope; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation: 9:30 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service Saturday, January 11, 2020 in St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Esko. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Matthews Lutheran Church or an organization working to feed the poor. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
