Sam Melvin William Mattson
January 8th, 1940 - March 22nd, 2020
Sam Melvin William Mattson, 80 of Esko passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2020 in the Solvay Hospice House with his loving family by his side. He was born January 8, 1940 in Thomson Township to Melti and Ellen (Maki) Mattson. Sam graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958. On February 24, 1962 he married Patricia Boutang in Esko. Sam was a truck driver for Conoco for 33 years. He served in the Army National Guard for nine years. He was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church in Esko and was a volunteer firefighter in Esko for 25 years. Sam was a friend to every person he met. His dependability, good nature, common sense, selflessness, generosity, and sense of humor were surpassed by few. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mavis Elmore; nephew, Daniel Elmore; and brother-in-law, Irv Boutang. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pat of Esko; son, Les Mattson of Two Harbors; daughter, Amy Mattson of Duluth; sister, Donna (Chum) Juntunen of Esko; two grandsons, Joshua (Kiarra) and Justin Kolodge; sisters-in-law, Linda (Dan) Haus and Lisbeth Boutang; and nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Solvay Hospice House for their loving and compassionate care. At Sam's request, there will be no services.
