John Walter Bednarek, 66, of Carlton, lost his battle during a live donor transplant from his son due to complications from NASH on October 24, 2014 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Originally born in Germany as Wadyslaw, he immigrated with his family to Cloquet in the 1950's. John volunteered for the Army alongside his brothers in the Vietnam War. Once returning home, he worked his way up at Conwed (a/k/a USG), building a reputation on being demanding, yet fair. Despite his intimidating exterios, John's sharp wit, disarming charm and integrity gained him respect in the community. He also served his community as a volunteer fireman/EMT for the city of Carlton. Raising his children alongside his wife of 48 years, John was a sacrificing man who was always devoted to family and always present in their lives. He could be found playing golf or cribbage with his brothers or sneaking off to nickel slots with his sister when he wasn't out working on his immaculate yard or woodworking. His perseverance and humanity will live on through all those he touched. John was preceded in death by his parents, Boleslaw and Zofia Bednarek; and his brothers, William and Thomas (Cheryl); and brother-in-law, Jim Mitchell. John is survived by his wife, Dianne; son, Noel of Barnum; daughters, Heather and Cassie Wilkey of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Ian, Steven, and Ella; sisters, Maria (Jim) Limmer of Utah, Irene Mitchell of Cloquet; brothers, Zenon (Emilia), George (Janice), and Stanley, all of Cloquet; along with numerous nieces and nephews. At the request of John, no service will be held. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
