Steven Glenn Hughey, affectionately known as "Rascal" by those who knew him best, passed away at the age of 72 on June 27, 2024, in Chandler, Arizona. Born on August 20, 1951, in Galesburg, Illinois, to parents William E. and Shirley M. (Stivers) Hughey. They both precede him in death. He married Susan Hughey on April 21, 2006; she survives.
Steven's zest for life was paralleled only by his love for his family. He is also survived by his daughter, Veronica (Bert) Haskell, Jr. of Princeville, IL; son, Ian (Sara) Hughey of Kettering, OH; step-daughter, Tara (David) Torres of Ahwatukee, AZ; step-son, Danny Touvell of Chandler, AZ; his adored grandchildren, Gabrielle and William Haskell, both of Illinois, and Isaac, Liam, and Divya Hughey, all of Ohio; two step grandsons, Blaise and Phoenix Torres, of Ahwatukee, AZ; two brothers, Alan D. Hughey of Lafayette, LA and Robert E. Hughey of Galesburg, IL; three very special nieces, Kindra and Kimberly Hughey of Phoenix, AZ and Ellen Hughey of Galesburg, IL; many cousins whom he grew up with as siblings; and several, lifelong friends who were exceptionally and deeply loved and he considered brothers. He is also preceded in death by one brother, David Hughey.
Rascal grew up in Galesburg, IL the oldest of four boys (yes, his mother was a saint!) hunting pheasant, rabbit and squirrel with his dad and three brothers. An alumnus of Galesburg High School, Rascal graduated with the class of 1969, later furthering his education by earning a degree from DeVry Polytechnic Institute in 1977. Everyone who knew Rascal can agree he was the life of the party! His high school days are fondly remembered and were filled with laughter, and wild and crazy adventures, making strong bonds of friendship with many that lasted a lifetime. No one was prouder of where he came from than he was and he never forgot his roots, visiting Galesburg annually and always organizing gatherings for the 69’ers.
As a proud United States Army Veteran, he served his country in Vietnam, earning the Army Commendation Medal. Following his military service, Steve worked at Gates Rubber Company and started a concert promotion business “Concerts Unlimited” being the first to bring Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes to Monmouth College in 1975. He later moved to Ohio where he lived for nearly 30 years. There he began his career journey in sales managing Record Town; was a store manager, stoking fires at Fire Place Specialties; achieving top life insurance salesman of the year accolades at Prudential Insurance for several years in a row; and later becoming a sales manager for Airtron Heating and Cooling. He concluded his work life with Wolf Mechanical in Phoenix, Arizona. His successful career in sales showcased his charismatic personality and innate ability to connect with people. Steve was such a likeable guy!
His life was one of deep, lifelong friendships, filled with over five decades of attending live rock concerts, and extensive travels later in life with Susan in his Nissan 350Z and 370Z, and he loved watching The Ohio State University Buckeye football games. He was an avid music enthusiast and knew all genres of music history and trivia better than anyone. Rock ‘n’ roll and blues were his favorite.
Steve was a member of the Desert Z Association, the Phoenix Blues Society, and weekly attendee of the the local “Burger Tuesday” club after his retirement. He also frequented “Munch A Mania” in Tempe, AZ, daily where they named a salad after him, “The Steve”.
A life so authentically lived deserves to be remembered. Steve will be laid to rest with military honors at National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. A celebration of Steve’s life hosted by his family is being planned in Galesburg, Illinois, details to be announced.
