Cheryl Lynn Tompkins, of Venice, FL, passed away on August 9, 2024, with family and friends by her side. Born to John and Dorothy (née Meyer) Tompkins in New Brunswick, NJ, on August 14,1953, she grew up in Somerset, NJ, and graduated from Franklin High School in 1971. For most of her life, Cheryl made her home in New Jersey.

Cheryl finally married her longtime sweetheart, Robert Sorenson, on December 3, 2015, after dating for 30 years—they had to be sure. Exactly one year after their wedding, she and Bob relocated to Venice, FL.

Cheryl was known by those who knew her for her outgoing and friendly nature. She had a deep desire to help others and was often seen volunteering at community food distribution events, assisting those less fortunate.

Throughout her career, Cheryl worked in retail management, a field in which she excelled. She also had a passion for crafts and ran her own craft business for many years. In her spare time Cheryl was an avid reader. She served on the board of directors of the Venice Gardens Civic Association, where she took great joy in organizing fundraising events, including many successful plant sales to benefit the association.

Cheryl and Bob enjoyed visiting flea markets, local garage sales, and open-air markets, always searching for unique finds they couldn’t resist. Cheryl also had a great love for cats, and her most recent feline companions—Skittles, Misty, Squeaker, and Patches—will miss her dearly.

Cheryl is survived by her devoted husband, Bob, her sister, Joyce Tompkins of Liverpool, PA, brother, Brian Tompkins, and his wife, Diane, of Milltown, NJ, along with their daughters, Amanda and Micaela Tompkins of New York City, NY. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Robert Inglis of Venice, FL, and her niece, Amy Schafer and husband Jesse, and their daughter, Raia, of Mechanicsburg, PA.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her sister, Gail Inglis, and her parents, John and Dorothy Tompkins.

A celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held on August 26, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Venice Gardens Civic Association in Venice, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Francis Animal Rescue, 1925 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL. If you wish to donate in Cheryl’s name, you can do so through their website: St. Francis Animal Rescue Donations.

Cheryl will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Rest in peace, our dear wife, sister, aunt, and friend to the community.
