Jay Phillip Dorfer

Jay Phillip Dorfer, LCDR, USN (Ret.), loving husband and father, passed from this life on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. He was 84. Jay was born on July 14, 1940 in Oakland, CA to the late John Phillip Dorfer and Mildred Boehm Dorfer. Following high school, Jay attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Oregon in Eugene. Jay served his country in the United States Navy and was an Engineering Officer on numerous ships and a Communications Officer while on shore duty. While serving in the Navy, Jay received a MBA from Chapman University, and following retirement, Jay received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and worked in various firms in Maryland and Charlotte, NC.
Jay was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Lynn Dorfer Fusco, and his beloved Cairn Terrier, Elspeth.
Jay is survived by his wife, Robin, and his daughter, Meredith Jones, and her husband, Cody, all of Columbia, SC. Jay is also survived by his daughter, Beth Miller, and her husband, Mike, of Sun Valley, ID as well as his two grandsons, George and Henry. Also left to mourn his passing are his brother-in- law, Robert Steele, and his wife, Penny, of Rock Hill, SC, and two nieces and their families: Kathy Madrigrano of Kenosha, WI and Nancy Flatley of Wauwatosa, WI. Additionally, two close family friends, Jean Kochick of Charlotte, NC and Bob Dernedde of Portland, OR mourn the passing of their long-time friend. Jay was also blessed with great neighbors who will miss him.
There will be a memorial service celebrating Jay’s life on Friday, November 1, 2024 at St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church in Columbia, SC at two o’clock in the afternoon.
