Col. Dudley A. Raine Jr, (Ret) MD
Dudley transitioned to his Eternal Home on November 7 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness. He was born October 18, 1939 to Dudley A. Raine, SR and Dorothy Donald Raine in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from Maury High School and attended Hampden Sydney College, later attending University of Maryland Medical School. After serving in the Army for 34 years, he retired to Amherst where he practiced family medicine until 2008. He continued to serve in community and civic organizations including Lynchburg Free Clinic, Amherst Rotary, Clinton Masonic Lodge #73, Mount Pleasant Masonic Lodge #84 and at his beloved church St Andrew Presbyterian.
Dudley led with a compassionate heart and a discerning mind. He will be remembered for his unassuming kindness, unwavering devotion to the people and causes he championed, his twinkling eyes, the pranks he pulled and for making everyone feel important.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, son, Dudley Raine III and (Kathleen) of Lynchburg, VA; Tanya Gunter (Mick) of Winston Salem, NC, brother Sandy Raine (Ruth) of Lake Wylie, SC; brother in law, Thomas Johnson of Amherst, VA.
Also, surviving are his most cherished grandchildren, Dudley Raine IV, Emily Raine, Bailey Gunter, Stephen Gunter and Paul Gunter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Sharon Raine, and sister Elizabeth Raine Johnson.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, November 11, 2024, at St Andrew Presbyterian Church with Pastors Dave Roberts and Mark Rackley officiating, followed by a reception. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 21206 Timberlake Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
