Barbara Irene Benson, age 95, of Colorado Springs, Colorado joined our Heavenly Father on October 26, 2024. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on October 1, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Edward James Worth and Helen Cecile (Vandersluis) Worth.
Barbara grew up in Canada. She was involved in Girl Guides starting at the age of 8. After her father’s passing, at the age of 10, her family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. Barbara graduated from Lord Byng High School in 1947. At the age of 17, her family immigrated to San Diego, California in September 1947. She went on to obtain her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco in 1952. Barbara worked in labor and delivery early on in her nursing career as a charge nurse. Barbara met her to-be husband, Jack Benson, during his residency. In 1956, Jack and Barbara were married in Honolulu, Hawaii following his medical internship. Barbara devoted the next 23 years to her family as an officer’s wife being stationed in places such as Germany and Alaska. She ended her nursing career in geriatrics in Colorado Springs, Colorado at Terrace Gardens Health Care Center.
Following retirement, Barbara dedicated her time to volunteering at First Presbyterian Church in the Get Set preschool program. She was also very involved in the church as a deacon, as well as a member of the Big Blue Choir. She continued with her passions of music, reading, traveling, and water aerobics. Barbara is remembered as being lovable, compassionate, comical, philanthropic, and self-less.
