Elwood "Chip" Greenwalt Moody, Jr.
April 22nd, 1948 - November 24th, 2024
Elwood Greenwalt "Chip" Moody, Jr.
Elwood Greenwalt "Chip" Moody, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 24 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 53 years married to his devoted wife, Barbara, and is survived by their daughter, Sara Snyder; son, Brian Moody (Ryan); and three cherished grandchildren, Ashby Moody, Seth Snyder, and Grant Moody. He also leaves behind many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews in the Moody, Shelton, and Peterson families.
Chip was born and raised in Delaware in 1948. He was a graduate of the University of Delaware, and an active member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, maintaining lifelong connections with his Delt brothers and his closest friends. Chip moved his family to Lynchburg, Virginia in 1980, where he dedicated 30 years of his career to Griffin Pipe.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elwood Sr. and Nina Peterson Moody; his brother, Stephen Moody, his brother-in-law, Chuck Shelton, and his son-in-law, Steven Snyder.
Chip was a true animal lover, and was known to have the constant companionship of many a rescued cat or dog throughout his life. His friends called him the cat man, because of the way cats would always seek his attention. His current companions, Charlie and Pepper, will miss his loving, gentle touch.
In his retirement, Chip enjoyed spending time with family and friends on his boat, Happy Hours, and at his home on Smith Mountain Lake. He loved working outside in his yard and deck container gardens. Chip's other passions included playing golf, enjoying time at the beach, and sharing his favorite music. He loved attending a good concert or golf tournament. Above all, he treasured the moments spent with his family. He was known for his unwavering support and presence at his children's and grandchildren's events, from swim meets and baseball games to band competitions, dance recitals, and soccer and football games. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and will forever be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, laughter, and love.
Family and friends are encouraged to share a memory, photo, or story of Chip in the online guestbook.
A celebration of Chip's life will be held on Saturday, December 7 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, VA at 2:00 PM with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Central Virginia Regional Rescue at https://www.cvrrescue.org/donate/
