Memorial

Richard Frederick Marshall, 73, a devoted family man and faithful Catholic, passed away peacefully on December 9 at his home in Lake Alfred, Florida, where he retired after spending much of his life in Connecticut.

Richard was born in Wallingford, Connecticut, to Richard and Mary Marshall where he spent his formative years on the family farm. Those cherished childhood experiences instilled in him a lifelong belief in the value of family—remaining close, depending on one another and sharing life’s joys and challenges.

A graduate of Lyman Hall High School and attendee of Southern Connecticut State University, Richard spent many dedicated years working at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. While there, he forged lifelong friendships and served as a mentor to many of his colleagues.

Richard’s generosity extended far beyond his professional life. He notably sponsored the citizenship process for a colleague from Colombia who became a lifelong friend, helping him achieve his dream of becoming an American citizen. Whether guiding co-workers or extending kindness to neighbors, Richard’s quiet compassion left an indelible mark.

Richard had a zest for life, reflected in his love for golfing, adventurous travel and spending time outdoors. A talented guitarist with a deep appreciation for music, he curated an impressive record collection, including prized original Beatles albums. His spontaneous harmonica performances—often accompanied by his beloved dog Jack’s joyful barking—remain treasured family memories.

Though private and modest, Richard was a steadfast supporter of the Catholic Church and a man of strong faith. He also maintained an avid interest in current events and politics, turning his home office into a personal broadcast center where he could thoughtfully follow the world around him.

To his family, Richard was a role model of generosity, warmth and dedication. He had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued, whether they were close friends, colleagues or newcomers. Above all, he loved his children and grandchildren fiercely, ensuring each of them felt uniquely cherished.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth “Betsy” Marshall, of Lake Alfred, Florida; his children, Christa Spencer (Christopher) of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Tara Zalatimo of New Haven, Connecticut; Richard Cahill (Christopher) of Potomac, Maryland and Rebecca “Becky” Sullivan (Garrett) of New Haven, Connecticut. He also leaves behind his adored grandchildren, Logan Cahill, Ava Sullivan, Aaron Sullivan, and Richard “Marshall” Cahill; his brother, Thomas Marshall (Tara) and his sister, Diane Sandoval (Rick).

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mary Marshall; his brother, Brian Marshall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious, a charity organization of which Richard was a longtime supporter. A memorial service will be held in Connecticut in the summer of 2025. Details will be shared as they become available with family and friends.
