Robert E. Lucero was born in Walsenburg, Colorado on March 5th, 1936 to parents Angela (Trujillo) and Anthony Lucero. He lived in Colorado the majority of his life and learned to hunt and fish with Uncle Jake. Robert passed those skills and love of the outdoors on to some of his children and grandchildren. In 1952 he and his best friend, Frank Pacheco, joined the military to avoid being drafted. Despite never learning to swim, he spent four years serving in the Navy where he spent time stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he fell in love with the food. He prided himself on always having a good appetite and always enjoying new foods, especially sweets such as homemade cheesecake, which will always be better than box cheesecake. Through the GI Bill, Robert was able to attend college at Trinidad State College and earn an associates degree in engineering.
On April 8th, 1961 Robert married Elizabeth Martinez in Trinidad, CO at the Holy Trinity Church. They moved to Ft. Collins, but eventually settled in the Sloan’s Lake area of Denver where they raised four children. They spent time camping and taking their children and grandchildren on road trips through Colorado and into New Mexico. Many hours were spent in that home playing cards, canning pickles and tomatoes, roasting and peeling chili, setting off fireworks, processing deer, elk, trout, doves, and rabbits, and getting together for holidays and birthdays. Robert also used much of the back yard to grow tomatoes, corn, pumpkins, and cucumbers.
After 34 years Robert took early retirement in 1998 from the Coors Porcelain Company. He never drank a Coors beer again. In his retirement he continued to fish and hunt and grow things, but he also befriended a fox, some stray cats, a few skunks - including adorable babies - and he had a small menagerie in his backyard. It wasn’t until he turned 80 that gardening and hunting no longer brought the joy they once did. He thanked God everyday that he could go back to bed and that he could sleep warmly.
On January 2nd, 2025 he left this life in that same home of over 50 years in Denver surrounded by his daughters. He is survived by brother Edward, sister Norma, daughters Denise, Barbara, and Kathy, son John, grandchildren Elise, Robin, Shelby, Zachary, and Brycen, great-grandchildren Adalida and Aemon, and countless nieces and nephews who fondly called him Uncle Bob.
The next time you hear Patsy Cline remember to take out your pistol, sip a Budweiser out of a small glass, and “nobody better say nothin’” in memory of Bob Lucero.
