William David Gay
April 3rd, 1958 - January 16th, 2025
William David Gay, known to all as “Bill,” passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the age of 66, after a long and courageous battle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
Born on April 3, 1958, Bill grew up in Spokane, Washington, a place he held close to his heart throughout his life. A proud athlete, Bill’s natural talent and passion for sports earned him a reputation as a true “jock.” Whether on the football field, wrestling mat, or baseball diamond, he thrived in the competitive spirit of the game. His love for sports endured throughout his life as he spent countless hours attending Mariners games with his family, coaching his kids’ teams, and cheering them on with his booming voice—familiar to everyone who shared a sports field or gymnasium with him. Bill also participated in every adult rec softball league he could find, never losing his love for competition.
Bill was just as vibrant at home as he was on the field. He was famous for flipping perfect blueberry pancakes and whipping up giant pots of chili for the teenagers who always felt welcome in his home. His playful spirit and strength shone brightly as he delighted in lifting children above his head—no child was ever too big or too small for Bill’s one-arm feats of strength! He also made sure a whole new generation understood the greatness of The Beatles and The Eagles.
Above all, Bill’s heart belonged to his family. He shared a deep and enduring love with his wife, Karen, who was always his center and his rock. Together, they raised two incredible children: Brad and Kendi, who carry forward his legacy of humor, strength and resilience. Bill was also a devoted and proud grandfather to three amazing grandchildren: Rainier, Marshall, and Tabitha, who brought endless joy and laughter to his life.
Bill’s family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at a service in his beloved Spokane, Washington, on a date to be announced. His memory will be cherished forever by all who knew him—whether as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, caring brother, silly uncle, cherished son, inspiring coach, loyal teammate, or trusted friend. Bill’s legacy of love, strength, and unshakable loyalty will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone whose lives he touched.
