Jerome Linwood Coleman
Jerome Linwood Coleman, age 90, passed away peacefully, Friday, January 10, 2025 surrounded by family at his home in Lynchburg. He was the loving, devoted husband of Phyllis Wood Coleman his high school sweetheart who was by his side, both looking forward to celebrating their 70th Wedding Anniversary, January 29, 1955.
Born October 2, 1934 in Lynchburg, VA he was the son of the late Silas Rice Coleman and Effie Lorene Ramsey Coleman. In addition to his parents he was predeceased in death by his sister, Barbara Ann Coleman Perdue.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Roxane Coleman Kays and her husband, Larry and a grandson, Michael Kays of Richmond, VA.
Jerome was a 1953 graduate of Brookville High School and was Awarded District Championship in TRACK in 1951-52 by The Virginia High School League. He also was a member of the BHS Varsity Basketball Team. After graduation he enjoyed Class reunions and lunch get-togethers with his classmates and those of Phyllis.
He worked for The News & Daily Advance beginning December 5, 1955 in the Composing Room as a type-setter and later in the Camera Room which he enjoyed most. He retired in 2007 after 52 years of service.
He was a member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church and a former member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he and his wife served as youth counselors.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Centra Health Hospice Team and the Alan B, Pearson Cancer Center for the loving care, guidance and support they provided Jerome.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to a charity of choice and expresses appreciation for the many kindnesses shown them.
A Graveside Service in Spring Hill Cemetery Is planned for a later date when weather is warmer and will be announced.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church will be at a later date and will also be announced.
