Betty Ann Kolman
September 15th, 1935 - January 5th, 2025
Betty was born on a farm in Cuba, Kansas on September 15, 1935, to Mary and Joseph Homolac. She was the oldest of five children. She attended a country school (Wayne and Kunkel) from first to eighth grade. Growing up on a farm taught Betty hard work at an early age. Before she was ten, she was milking cows and helping raise siblings, all of which helped prepare her for marriage at the youthful age of eighteen. Among her greatest desires, Betty wanted to be a wife, raise a family, and be able to be a stay-at-home Mom. Betty graduated from Belleville (Kansas) High School in 1953. She married her sweetheart, Bob Kolman, a month later. Immediately thereafter she left with Bob for Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington, where Bob was previously stationed. While there, their first child Jim was born. Two more children, Mike and Vicky, were born during Bob’s college years in Indiana. Betty remarked more than once through the years about having “three under three” with a mix of pride and exhaustion. After 5 years in Littleton, the family settled in Colorado Springs in 1964. There Betty worked outside the home part-time to support finances. Betty loved to sing, dance, and play the piano. The piano became her main focus. She took piano lessons for only 4 summers during elementary school, but she played quite well. In 1965 the pastor of Holy Trinity parish asked if she could play the organ because they needed an organist. So, she taught herself how to play the organ. That was the beginning of more than 50 years of service in the music ministry for Holy Trinity, Saint Patrick’s, and Saint Gabriel’s parishes. Despite the time and energy necessary for serving in music, Betty found much joy and gratification though it and from the many musicians she had the privilege of working with, throughout the years. Betty wanted to pass on her love of music to her children and so she taught Vicky how to play the piano and Jim and Mike played in school band from late elementary through High school. Betty also enjoyed gardening. Bob and Betty had a large, fenced area that included a greenhouse to grow a variety of vegetables. She also liked to envision changes in their house and with that the furniture or cabinetry that it would necessitate, knowing that Bob would be able to do all of that himself. Betty particularly liked hosting. Both she and Bob loved gathering family and friends in their home to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, and parties for musicians and co-workers. Betty and Bob treasured spending time with family and friends, probably more than anything else in their lives. Betty died peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2025, 9 months after Bob, her husband of 70 years, died. We take comfort in believing that they have been reunited. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary; her husband, Bob; and her sister, Emily. She is survived by her sisters, Rose of Downs, Kansas, and Kathy of Ellinwood, Kansas; her brother, Steve of San Diego, California; her children, Jim (Nancy) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mike (Bernie) of Cube, Kansas, and Vicky of Cuernavaca, Mexico; her grandchildren, Jill of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jon (Amanda) of Astoria, Oregon, Amy (Brian) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Joe (Faye) of Prosper, Texas, and Alicia of New York City, New York; and her great-grandchildren, Beaux and Sean of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Xandr of Prosper, Texas.
