Miss Hoskins was a graduate of Hannah More Academy in Reistertown, MD; Randolph Macon Woman’s College and Lynchburg College where she received her Master of Education in 1967. While at Lynchburg College, she was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honor society.
Liz Garnett taught history at E.C. Glass High School for 33 years before retiring in 1987. She dedicated herself to teaching high school history, leaving a lasting impact on countless students. Her first year in the classroom was challenging, as she worked tirelessly to spark her students’ interest in the past. But with patience, creativity, and a deep passion for storytelling, Liz Garnett soon found ways to bring history to life for her students. Whether through vivid reenactments, thoughtful discussions, or connecting historical events to students’ everyday lives, she made the past feel relevant and exciting. Over time, her classroom became more than just a place to memorize dates and facts. It was a space where students discovered the importance of understanding the world and the people who shaped it. Beyond igniting a love for history, she was deeply committed to preparing her students for life, equipping them with critical thinking skills, strong writing abilities, and a curiosity that served them well in higher education. Her enthusiasm was infectious and many of her students went on to pursue history or education themselves, inspired by her unwavering commitment to making the subject engaging and meaningful. Her colleagues admired her dedication and she was often a mentor to new teachers, always ready with advice and support.
She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Vacation Bible School and sang in the choir, a member of the Junior League of Lynchburg, Daughter’s of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Barons of Runnemede and a past president of the Spinsters Club of Lynchburg.
