Franklin Emerson Laurence Carman, Sr.
July 2nd, 1938 - February 6th, 2025
In Loving Memory Of
Frank E. Carman Sr., aged 86, who was affectionately known as "Pop" and referred to as "G Pop" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away on February 6, 2025, at his winter residence in Palm Bay, Florida.
Born on July 2, 1938, in Bridgeton, NJ, Frank was the son of Allen Carman and Isabel Willis Carman Meehan and had two siblings, Edward and Allen.
Frank grew up across the street from the prestigious Cohanzick Country Club, where he discovered his passion for golf at the tender age of 7. His early exposure to the sport allowed him to develop skills that would later shape his career. By the age of 13, his dedication to golf became apparent as he would leap off the school bus each day, casually tossing his books over the fence before eagerly heading to the course to work as a caddy-master. His hard work and determination paid off when he was named an assistant pro at just 17 years old, a remarkable achievement that showcased his burgeoning talent.
Frank further honed his skills at Buena Vista Country Club, where he served as an assistant pro under the guidance of his brother, Edward. In 1962, at the age of 24, Frank made a triumphant return to Cohanzick Country Club as the head golf pro. This role allowed him to not only teach aspiring golfers but also to play alongside legends of the sport, including Julius Boros and his idol, Jack Nicklaus, which was a dream come true for him.
Throughout his career, Frank expanded his reach by serving as the pro at several renowned golf courses in the South Jersey area, including Pinecrest Golf Course, Beckett Golf Club, and Eastlyn Golf Course. Passionate about instruction, he established the Academy of Golf, where he was a pioneer in utilizing early portable slow-motion, frame-by-frame swing analysis, a technique that greatly enhanced players' understanding of their swings.
Frank concluded his illustrious career at Wheat Road Golf, where he dedicated many summers to nurturing young talent through well-organized youth camps, focusing on instilling golf skills. His contributions to the sport were widely recognized; in 1988, he was named Teacher of the Year by the Philadelphia PGA Section, a testament to his skill and dedication to teaching the game. Additionally, he was honored as the New Jersey PGA Player of the Year five times and earned accolades as the Senior New Jersey PGA Player of the Year three times, solidifying his legacy in the world of golf.
After his late wife passed, Frank headed south to Palm Bay, Florida. You could always find him hanging out at the local golf club hitting a few balls and enjoy the company of his fellow golfers. One of Franks biggest pride and joy was his 2020 Starburst orange mustang, which he diligently maintained by cleaning it on a daily basis. During the summer months, he spent time on this son’s boat, “Anita’s Bigger Boat” on the Chesapeake Bay. His favorite past time was sitting on the back of the deck puffing on his pipe, enjoying a cold Yuengling, and hanging with the marina friends.
Frank dreamed of visiting the “wild west”, so his son and daughter in law took him to visit Tombstone Arizona, which was his last big adventure.
In heaven, he was welcomed by his late wife, Barbara Carman (née Tarnowski), his father, Allen, his mother, Isabel, and his brothers.
Frank is survived by his son, Frank (Anita) Carman Jr. of Delaware, as well as his daughters, Bonnie (John) Redkoles and Stephanie (Ted) Davis, both residing in New Jersey. Additionally, he is survived by his grandchildren, which include Frankie Carman III, Matthew Carman, Isabel Carman Tingle, Kristen Redkoles Polk, Jennie Redkoles Booz, Corrine Davis, and Keira Davis. Furthermore, he leaves behind eleven great-grandchildren.
Details regarding the funeral arrangements, including the date, venue, and any planned memorial services, will be thoughtfully communicated in due course.
We appreciate your patience during this time.
