James William Stewart – A Life Well-Lived

James W. Stewart, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025 at the age of 91. A man of unwavering loyalty, deep love, and quiet strength, Jim’s life was defined by his fierce devotion to family, his deep love for the water, and his steadfast patriotism.

Born on July 13, 1933, Jim was named after his uncle, a ship captain, which seemed only fitting for a man who would spend his life drawn to the water. A lifelong boater, he owned and cherished many boats over the years, serving as Commander of the Power Squadron and Commander of Flotilla 84 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary of Sarasota, FL. The water was his second home, and he was happiest with the open water ahead of him.

Jim was the beloved only child of Lillian and William Stewart, who believed the sun rose and set on their son. He, in turn, was a devoted son, caring for their every need until the very end.

The son of Canadian immigrants, Jim was fiercely patriotic and carried a deep love for his country. He spoke of the day he watched his parents become naturalized American citizens, recalling the moment with immense pride.

Jim’s professional life was spent at F. Joseph Lamb Co. (1960 - 1989), where his dedication and work ethic were evident to all who knew him. As a sales engineer, he sold machine tools to General Motors and took great pride in having contributed to the development of the Northstar engine, a project that was among his proudest professional achievements.

He was an active member of the Detroit Yacht Club for over 20 years. Jim, Sharon, and their girls shared many wonderful years there, creating cherished memories on the water.

But above all, Jim’s greatest love was his family.

A devoted husband, he and his wife, Sharon Stewart (Mead), shared an incredible 75 years together—70 of them as husband and wife. They were each other’s constant companions, true partners in every sense of the word.

Jim was the proud father of two beautiful daughters, Vikki Lasota (Steven) and Faith Myers (Stewart). To his girls, he was their rock and unwavering support, ensuring they always knew they were safe and deeply loved.

His daughters gave him five wonderful grandchildren, Leah Sponaugle (Troy), Blake Lasota (Sarah), Austin Lasota, Brynn Boyd, and Blair Boyd, who were his pride and joy. He adored each of them and loved nothing more than hearing about their adventures, successes, and dreams.

His love continued through the next generation, as he became the proud great-grandfather to Troy, Liberty, and Lily Sponaugle.

But more than any title or achievement, Jim was known for his wisdom and ability to truly listen. He was a loyal friend, a steady presence, and someone you could always count on.

A small obituary could never encompass the magnitude of the man Jim was, nor the impact he had on those who loved him. His legacy is one of love, family, and quiet strength. He leaves behind a family who will miss him beyond words, but who are forever grateful to have been loved by him.
