Lester Hartwell was born on December 16, 1924 to Carl and Mabel Hartwell in Chehalis, Washington. He attended Auburn Academy, and Walla Walla College. He married the love of his life Daisy Schafer on July 3, 1946. They moved to a small farm in rural southeast Portland. Lester set to the task of building his five bedroom two story home. He raised chickens, grew vegetables, and cared for many large apple and pear trees on the farm. He made the best apple cider on the block. Lester made the weekends into family time with camping trips. Rain or shine Friday after work the family was off to Cape Lookout State Park in Tillamook, Oregon. He would make the best campfire pancakes. Lester worked most of his life in the food industry starting out with baking, and ending at Safeway warehouse in Clackamas, Oregon. The building of the Clackamas Town Center Mall forced him to sell his beloved farm, and move to Gervais, Oregon. When he retired from Safeway he moved to Lincoln City, Oregon. When he grew tired of the tourists that took over the town, he moved to Salem Oregon, and finally Portland Oregon. Lester loved to read, walk on the beach, and most of all good food. There was nothing better then the smell of hot cinnamon rolls in his house. He took an active roll with The Seventh Day Adventist church to help set up and expand the library in Lincoln City Oregon. He always took the time to listen, except when Jeopardy was on. He lived his life as a servant to God. Lester had happy eyes, and a gentle sprit, and the conviction that comes from a deep faith. Lester is survived by his brother Glenn, 4 children Kenneth, Rita, Steven, Lewis and 8 grandkids, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. A celebration of Lester’s life will be held at Seventh Day Adventist church 2335 NE 22nd Street Lincoln City Oregon on Sunday 11-13-2016 at 2PM. Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home

At Wilhelm's Portland Memorial, we have a rich history dating back to 1901 when we became the first crematory west of the Mississippi River, known then as The Portland Cremation Association. Our historic chapel, marked by its cornerstone placed on February 5th, 1901, has stood the test of time. Today, our memorial site spans 8 stories, approximately 7 miles of corridors of beautifully preserved architecture, and the largest mausoleum on the west coast, spanning 2.5 city blocks....
