Toleman "Bill" Garrard Spurlock, Jr
July 10th, 1930 - February 4th, 2025
Toleman "Bill" Garrard Spurlock of Calhan, Colorado, passed into heaven on February 4, 2025. Bill was born on July 10, 1930 to Nina (Cogan) and Toleman Spurlock, Sr. in Hamilton, Ohio. Bill was the youngest of seven children. The family lived in Middletown, Ohio. Bill joined the Navy in 1948 and was stationed in San Diego, California. He was assigned to the USS Yorktown. Bill was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal and discharged in 1954 to reserve status until 1956. Bill was an over-the-road truck driver hauling iron ore from the mountain mines in Silverton, Colorado to Salt Lake City, Utah. Bill had a deep-seated passion for driving big rig trucks and restoring antique farm tractors. Bill also worked and retired from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Bill married his beautiful bride, Virginia Maxine Ashby, on May 12, 1951 in Ridgecrest, California. Bill and Maxine were married 73 years until her death on April 16, 2024. The couple’s youngest son, Joseph, died as an infant. Their seven children surviving Bill’s death are Phyllis Marie (Spurlock) Zadra and her husband Bill, Karen Ann (Spurlock) Slyter, Margaret “Maggie” Elise (Spurlock) Stark and her husband Mike, Michelle (Spurlock) Young, Anthony “Tony” Gerard Spurlock and his wife Stacy, Michael David Spurlock and his wife Staci, and Angela Geralyn (Spurlock) Simco. Bill’s son-in-laws, Ken Slyter and Evan Young preceded him in death. At the time of his death, Bill had 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
The rosary will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 9:30a.m. with the funeral mass to follow immediately after at 10:00a.m. at St. Michael’s Parrish, located at 574 8th Street, Calhan, Colorado. Refreshments will be served immediately following mass at St. Michael’s.
The burial service will be held at 1:00p.m. at Pike’s Peak National Cemetery, located at 10545 Drennan Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80925. with a Celebration of Life reception to follow at approximately 2:00p.m. at Kit Carson Riding Club, located at 6775 Cowpoke Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80908.
