Steven Maryl Pauley, 74, passed away on January 7, 2025, in Gresham, Oregon. Born on May 27, 1950, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Harry and Jean Brady Pauley, Steve’s life was a testament to resilience, determination, and an unwavering zest for life. Despite having a diagnosis of cerebral palsy at birth and given a dire prognosis, Steve defied expectations from the very beginning. His parents, refusing to accept limitations on their son’s potential, enrolled him at the Children’s Hospital School in Eugene, Oregon, at just three years old. There, he thrived in an environment of encouragement and support.

Steve attended Lynch Grade School and graduated from Gresham High School in 1969. Known for his strength, intelligence, and kindness, he embraced life with enthusiasm. A passionate golfer, Steve became a respected figure at the Gresham Golf Club, where he achieved an impressive 11 handicap and a remarkable hole-in-one. He proudly shared that his best rounds were 35 for nine holes and 78 for 18 holes. Often regarded as the club’s best putter, Steve’s dedication to the game was unwavering. He participated regularly in the annual Giusti Memorial Golf Tournaments and once served as the honorary chairperson for the “Juniors for Muscular Dystrophy” tournament at Gresham Golf Club. A highlight of his life was meeting his idol, Arnold Palmer, at a Senior Golf Tournament, where Palmer gifted him an autographed photo that Steve treasured for decades. Steve credited much of his golfing success to his brother-in-law, Bill Eggers, a patient and supportive mentor who also played professionally on the PGA Tour.

Beyond golf, Steve had a sharp strategic mind and excelled at chess and card games, particularly Gin Rummy. He worked in publications at Mount Hood Community College and contributed as a putting coach under Marvin Hiebert, who founded the college’s football, wrestling, and golf programs. For the last decade of his life, Steve found a home at Springwater Adult Care Home following the passing of his parents and sister. The owners, Jason and Bea Cinpean, cherished Steve as part of their family. He was always eager to lend a hand, whether painting rooms or working on cars. He formed a special bond with their son, Elliot, whom he fondly called his “little friend” and always stood up for. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an enduring impact on all who knew him.

Steve is survived by his brother-in-law, Timothy Dean Eggers, and his wife, Sally Goetz Shuler, of Gresham; his nephew, Tyler J. Eggers, his wife, Debbie, and their daughters, Emily Eggers and Carly Eggers Rathbone (husband Jason Rathbone); and his niece, Julie Eggers, and her partner, Matt Andrews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Jean Pauley, and his sister, Lynda Eggers.

Tim Eggers, Steve’s brother-in-law and legal guardian, along with his wife, Sally, remained a constant and devoted presence in Steve’s life. They ensured he was always surrounded by love and support, strengthening their family bond through holidays and frequent visits. Steve also especially enjoyed the companionship of his cousin, Mike Gustafson, who visited often, as well as his golfing buddy, Bill Haley.

Though Steve never took first place in a golf tournament, he exemplified the true spirit of competition — leading by example, inspiring others, and embracing life with courage. His legacy is one of resilience, determination, and love.

A private memorial service will be held in his honor at Willamette National Cemetery on April 4 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation or a charity of your choice.
