William "Bill" Harold Shafer, Jr.
April 15th, 1939 - February 27th, 2025
William (Bill) Harold Shafer Jr., 85, passed away on February 27, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona. Bill was born on April 15, 1939, in Tucson, Arizona. His early years were spent with his parents in various road construction camps across the state. He graduated from Camelback High School in the class of 1957 before continuing his education at Menlo College (California) and Arizona State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering and a Master of Science in Sanitary Engineering.
Bill had a deep appreciation for the natural world and dedicated much of his career to water quality and environmental stewardship. One of his favorite jobs was working with an environmental firm through the Bureau of Reclamation, where he traveled throughout Arizona, collecting water samples. After earning his master's degree, he worked for many years at the State of Arizona Department of Water Quality until his retirement.
From an early age, photography was one of Bill's greatest passions. As a teenager, he set up his own darkroom for processing and printing photographs, a practice he continued wherever he lived. He
was a true artist. Over the years, he amassed an impressive collection of cameras and equipment, capturing countless moments through his lens. He photographed many weddings, cultural events and often ventured to the Salt River for weekend photo expeditions.
Later in life, he became the family historian, dedicating himself to extensive genealogical research. For fifteen years, he spent Wednesday nights helping others with their own family history projects, becoming a walking library of knowledge.
With great faith and dedication, Bill was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities, including a Bishop's counselor. His quiet devotion and service spoke volumes about his character. He was known for his kind words and excellent speaking ability, always addressing others with warmth and sincerity. Those who knew Bill often remarked on his kindness and the unwavering support he extended.
He had an inquisitive mind and could figure out how to do almost anything he set his mind to. His focus and determination were evident in all aspects of his life. He also carried a constant smile that brightened the lives of those around him.
Bill shared a beautiful love story with his wife of sixty-three years, Glenda Perry Shafer, a relationship that began with a little help from Bill's father. Seeing potential between them, Bill's father introduced him to Glenda at a real estate office and ensured they stayed connected by encouraging Glenda to write to Bill while he was away at Menlo College in California. That simple act led to a lifelong partnership. They married in 1961 and moved into their home that Bill's father built. They have remained in that home for the duration of their marriage, a testament to their enduring love and commitment.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Glenda: their children, Clint (Amy) Shafer and Emily (David) Quist. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Audrey (Ryan) Anderson, Jake Shafer, Garrett (Marina) Shafer, Cassie Shafer, Danica (Ted) Shumway, Samantha Quist, Mikaela (Chris) Magby, Dryden (Alysha) Quist, Christopher Brown and Jasmine Shafer. There are also four great grandchildren, expecting an addition two. He is also survived by brother Judd (Janis) Shafer and sisters Audrey Diehl and Karen Shafer. He was preceded in death by his daughter Melanie and his parents, William H. Shafer Sr. and Viola A. Shafer.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to
10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 1221 West Howe Street in Tempe, Arizona. A 10 a.m. funeral service will follow with a brief graveside service at the Mesa City Cemetery. Attendees may enter the cemetery off Country Club Drive at 13th street.
