JoAnn Frances Zingg, 88, of Calhan, Colorado, passed away peacefully with family on February 20, 2025.  JoAnn was born on July 12, 1936 to George J. Larrabee and Inza I. Waldron Larrabee in Rome, NY.  

After graduating from Verona high school, JoAnn became the first drive thru bank teller for Rome’s Nation Bank and Trust.  After that JoAnn started her career with the federal government at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York.  It was on Griffiss Airforce base where she met and married John Zingg.  JoAnn gave birth to two children, Jacqueline and Mark.  After moving around the US, JoAnn and John settled down in his home town of Albuquerque New Mexico. 

 

After a divorce, JoAnn, with her mother’s help, stayed in Albuquerque, NM raising her two children.  She began working for the federal Government at Sandia’s Technical Library and moved on to eventually working for the Department of Energy.  During her career she was given many awards, letters of recognition and certificates for exemplary work performance.  She had in over 20 years of working for the federal government once she retired.   

 

During her life in Albuquerque, JoAnn met her soul mate Harold Hedval.  They had a beautiful and loving relationship for over 40 years until his death.  JoAnn and Harold traveled for many years to Montana, Oregon, Wyoming and California visiting family and friends. She also spent time making flower arrangements and knotted quilts, writing poetry which earned an award – Editors Choice award for outstanding achievement in poetry, and spending time with her friends at the house in Albuquerque.  She had many lifelong friendships with her co-workers, neighbors, and her children’s friends and their parents. JoAnn eventually moved to Colorado to be cared for by her daughter. 

 

JoAnn was predeceased by her father George, and mother Inza Larrabee, brothers, Paul of Calverton, NY, James of Rome, NY, and Timothy Fitzpatrick of Gainesville, FL.  She is survived by daughter Jacqueline Compton and husband Phil of Colorado Springs, CO, son Mark Zingg and wife Vonda of Los Lunas, NM, grandson Christopher Anthony and wife Lora of Grove City PA, granddaughters, Madison and Adaya Zingg of Los Lunas, NM, Kim Compton and husband Jeremy of Peyton, CO, Jessica Compton of Ithica, NY.  She is also survived by her great grandchildren: Evelyn and Henry Anthony, Peyton, Michael and Linkin Compton, Kaidance and Kori Shoulders, and great-great granddaughter Everleigh Compton. 

 

Celebration of Life services will be determined at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the New Mexico Children’s Foundation (nmchildren.org) or National Park Foundation (nationalparks.org).
