Richard "Dewitte" Dewitte Douglas
June 18th, 1953 - March 23rd, 2025
Richard Dewitte “Dewitte” Douglas, age 71, passed away on March 23, 2025, in Gainesville, Florida. Born on June 18, 1953, in High Springs, Florida, Dewitte lived a life deeply rooted in family, friendship, and the great outdoors.
For 37 years, Dewitte dedicated himself to his career as a cable splicer. His strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to his craft were hallmarks of his professional life. Yet it was his devotion to those around him—family, friends, and colleagues—that truly defined him.
Dewitte is lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda Henry Douglas of High Springs; three sons: Scotty (Jennifer) Douglas of High Springs, Jason Douglas of Gainesville, and Garrett (Lindsey) Douglas of Newberry; and his daughter Lindsey Douglas of Ft. White. He also embraced three bonus children —April Weldon, Tracey Overton, and Angela Bean and their families—as part of his extended family. His days were brightened by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought endless joy into his life.
He is also survived by three brothers: Samuel (Linda) Douglas and Council Jr. (Janice) Douglas of High Springs; Leland (Rosalie) Douglas of Bell; and two sisters: Shirley Ann Osteen and Rose Annette Coots, both of High Springs. Dewitte’s legacy continues through numerous nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives he touched with warmth and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his father Council Douglas Sr., mother Adell Lashley Douglas, and brother DJ Douglas.
Dewitte was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Known for his kind heart and selfless spirit, he had a teasing smile that could light up any room and a wit that made every gathering more memorable. Fishing was one of his greatest passions—especially on Wednesdays when he would join his “Old Men Fishing Buddies” for storytelling sessions, who could catch the biggest fish and treasure hunts along the riverbanks. These weekly outings were sacred rituals filled with laughter and camaraderie.
Another favorite pastime was watching deer from the comfort of his living room window before dashing out to the shop to take aim—a hobby that blended patience with excitement in true Dewitte fashion.
Sports also held a special place in Dewitte’s heart. He had a passion for coaching the youth in sports and life as well. He made an impact on many young people. Whether cheering from the sidelines or enjoying games at home, he found connection through competition and shared enthusiasm.
Dewitte’s life was one marked by love—for nature, for family traditions, for quiet moments spent outdoors—and above all else, for people. His memory will live on in every fish story retold beside a riverbank or every deer sighted at dusk from a living room window.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire kindness for generations to come.
We will be celebrating Dewitte’s life by throwing him a party in his favorite spot, Steinhatchee. Please join us in celebrating him on April 26, 2025 from 11:00 to 3:00. The address is 901 NW Bird Pond Rd, Steinhatchee, 32359. We have planned for food to be catered. No special attire is required. Just come and enjoyed the time together.
