In Loving Memory of Charlie Lee Gayle
Charlie Lee Gayle, 89, of Davenport, Florida, passed away on April 14, 2025. Born on July 26, 1935, in Escambia County, Alabama, he was the son of the late Wiley Richard and Annie Lee Mobley Gayle. Charlie proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962, achieving the rank of Seaman and earning the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged at the conclusion of his service, reflecting his dedication and faithful service. Charlie relocated to Davenport, Florida, in 2003 from Cleveland, Ohio, where he had served as a State Police Officer for several years before retiring. A devoted member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Haines City, FL.
Beyond his professional achievements, Charlie was an active volunteer with the Fraternal Order of Police, contributing to both the Cleveland Lodge 120 and the Lakeland Lodge 46. He was also a dedicated member of the Masons. An avid bodybuilder, Charlie maintained a strong and disciplined lifestyle throughout his life. Described as charismatic, family-oriented, and hardworking, he left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley and Annie; his sisters, Mattie Mae Gayle Bouyer Rice and Emma McDonald. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Esther M. Gayle; sons, Tracy R. Gayle, Tony Gayle, Ismael A. Gayle, and Lavar P. Gayle; brother, Christopher Gayle; sisters, Annie C. Wilson and Lenora Barry; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM, following the service, military honors will be rendered, all at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Haines City, Florida.
