"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die" - Thomas Campbell

Carl Peter Herreid passed away peacefully in his home in Longmont, CO on April 11, 2025, just weeks shy of his 95th birthday.  He lived a life full of love, laughter, and games.

He was raised in his beloved hometown of Blair, WI with his younger brother Roger and loving parents, Francis and Sally Herreid.  Favorite memories of life in Blair included fishing with his father, baking Norwegian Christmas cookies with his mother, and playing cards with his brother and cousins.  He recalled playing bridge during the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Carl attended UW Madison, where he played basketball and graduated with a degree in Physical Education.  After serving in the Army in Okinawa, Japan, he returned to school and earned a degree in chemistry.  He married his cherished wife, Marianne, and they welcomed their children Todd, Tim, and Sally, before moving and settling in Neenah, WI.  There he worked at American Can for the majority of his professional career.  He developed lifelong friendships that lasted even after Carl and Marianne moved to Colorado in 2002 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Carl embraced the joys of life around him throughout his life.  He and Marianne loved to golf, bicycle, and ski with their many friends and family.  Carl was a loving and engaged father to his children, and celebrated their lives and successes as they grew up and started families of their own.  He enjoyed woodworking, starting with making furniture and other woodcrafts and eventually honing his woodcarving skills through the creation of old-time caricatures.  He loved being outdoors, whether that was fishing, camping, waking the dog, sailing with his son, Todd, or just mowing the lawn.  He had a green thumb that was especially adept at raspberries, and he turned them into a plethora of jam each year.  Throughout his life, Carl’s faith and community with the church were his foundation.  Carl and Marianne were active members of the church enjoying Bible study throughout the years.

Carl will be remembered as someone with a playful, kind, and welcoming spirit who often showed his love and respect with good natured teasing.  Those who would dish it back earned a place dear to his heart and their lively banter was contagious.  An avid sportsman from a young age, he enjoyed playing basketball and had raucous tennis tournaments with friends from American Can.  He also cheered heartily for all of the Wisconsin teams, especially the Packers.  His love of card games carried throughout his life.  For over 70 years, he and Marianne enjoyed playing in bridge groups.  They also kept laughter and fun in their marriage with a nightly cribbage match diligently tracked throughout each year.  They were so evenly matched that the end-of-year winnings might have covered the cost of an ice cream.  As time went on, he transferred his competitive spirit to crushing his grandchildren in cards and games of all kinds.

Carl touched the lives of many people throughout his life and treasured every moment spent with his family and friends.  He will be greatly missed.

Preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Sally, brother Roger, and son Todd.
