Charlotte Nell Alex passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025 in Owensboro, Kentucky. She was 96 years old. Charlotte was born in Denver, Colorado to the late Charles G. Chiles and Nell Lee Chiles. She spent her childhood in Colorado, then moved with her family to Kansas City, Missouri where she graduated from high school. Charlotte met her husband, James T. Alex, Jr., at the University of Kansas City (now UMKC). They were married for 73 years and had three children.
Charlotte paused her college education for marriage and raising children, then resumed her education and graduated after they were grown. She worked for a while as a teacher, and as a real estate agent. Her main interest, however, was in being a wife, homemaker, mother, and (great) grandmother. Charlotte was a devoted Christian. She was active in both her Michigan and Florida churches, even teaching Bible School while in her 80's. Charlotte was also involved in the Gideons Auxiliary, since her husband was an active Gideon. She was a talented artist, sharing her paintings with many in the family. Charlotte and James traveled the world, often with their brothers and wives.
They enjoyed playing golf and cards with family and friends. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James, and brother Lee (Margaret). She is survived by her children Paula (Dr. James) Naas, Fred (Sonya) Alex, and Dr. Ted Alex, grandchildren Matthew (Heather) Naas and Peter (Carrie) Naas, great-grandchildren Ana Naas, Alex Naas, Audrey Naas, and Liza Naas, sister-in-law Patty Alexopoulos Duffy (Quinn), as well as many loving nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance will be held at 12:00 Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Farley Funeral Home in Venice, Florida. A visitation will be one hour before the service. Interment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy can be sent to Gideons International.
