Elizabeth Ursula Wicker
November 29th, 1926 - April 21st, 2025
In Loving Memory
Mrs. Elizabeth Ursula Wicker, 98, of Columbia, SC, passed away peacefully into Eternity with the Lord, on Monday, April 21, 2025. She was a member of the Pomaria Lutheran Church. She was the loving wife of 59 years to Fred Roy Wicker, Sr. and was the daughter of Wilhem Tiggeman and Martha Krah Tiggeman of Kassell, Germany.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Wicker Holmes Fanning and her husband Billy of Pomaria, SC and her son Fred Roy Wicker, Jr. and his wife Dolores (Greene) Wicker of Knoxville, TN. She was lovingly referred to as “Ursul” by many of her friends, “Mutti” by Linda, “Mom” by Fred, and was always “Omi” to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless others. Her five surviving grandchildren are Michael Dailey, Tammy Dailey, Robert Holmes (Ivy), Ben Wicker (Nicole), and Megan Wicker; one step-grandchild - Jennie (Fanning) Long (Brent); six great-grandchildren – Coral Dailey, Hampton Holmes, Mckenzie (Holmes) Sosa (Javier), Cooper Holmes, Campbell and Jonah Wicker; two step-great-grandchildren Tory and Ryan Long; and four great-great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Madlyn Dailey and Paisleigh and Kyleigh Sosa. Many other nieces and nephews in North Carolina, South Carolina and Germany are also part of her extended family.
She was preceded in passing by her “Schatze” (meaning sweetheart) and husband, Fred R. Wicker, Sr.; daughter Irene A. Dailey; and son-in-law Clyde H. Holmes. Her family in Germany who also preceded her include her parents, Wilhem and Martha Tiggeman; her brothers, Gustav, Heinchen, Udo, and Fritzi; and her sisters, Linchen and Inchin, all of whom resided in her hometown of Kassell, Germany. She last visited her motherland in 2009 at the age of 83, accompanied by her grandson, Ben and his wife Nicole.
Mrs. Wicker was a proud German – and her personality was encapsulated equally by her German heritage and her roles as a wife, mother, family member and friend. She loved to cook meals originating from Germany and her family and friends considered it a treat to have her cook schnitzel, rouladen, cucumber salad, German potato salad, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and especially her infamous potato pancakes – and she cooked a mean Southern breakfast! She had an impeccable green thumb and took great pride in her flowers and seemingly being able to make anything grow, and it was clear that this was a passion stemming from the home gardens in Kassell. She loved to sing German melodies and songs and was skilled in knitting, sewing, and crocheting. She met her Schatze, Fred, while he was stationed in Germany during World War II where they were married and had their first child. She moved to the US where she raised two little girls, learned to drive, gained her US citizenship all while knowing very little English and while her husband was serving the country. She traveled back home to Kassell many times with her family and even some of her grandchildren. She was a very strong and independent lady who crossed the ocean and built a life for her family and a true survivor.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for all of the prayers, phone calls, visits and food. Your kindness is deeply appreciated during this time. Her children, Linda and Fred, would like to express gratitude for the loving and attentive care given by Robert and Ivy Holmes. The dedicated staff from Pathway Hospice, especially Kalley Quick, have been a blessing as the family has navigated this transition.
Memorials may be made to Pomaria Lutheran Church at PO Box 246, Pomaria, SC, 29126.
Funeral Services will be at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209 on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 11:00AM with Pastor Michele Fischer officiating.
