Shirley Ethel Farris
October 21st, 1926 - April 14th, 2025
May Shirley’s memory bring comfort to those who knew her and serve as a lasting reminder of a life well lived.
Shirley Ethel Ferris (née Dennie), age 98, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, in Rockledge, Florida. Born on October 21, 1926, in Pulaski, New York, Shirley lived a long and vibrant life filled with dedication to her family, community service, and joyful pursuits.
Shirley pursued her nursing education at Buffalo Children's Hospital, laying the foundation for a lifetime of care and compassion. After relocating to Florida, she became an integral part of the Brevard County School System as a "Grey Lady," offering support in school clinics. She volunteered for many years at Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she performed hearing tests on newborns with great care and diligence.
A spirited and active member of her community well into her later years, Shirley was known for her love of golf and all sports. She played golf throughout Brevard County and especially enjoyed time on the courses at Cocoa Beach and Viera Country Clubs well into her early 90s. She was also a proud member of the Neighbors of Suntree and the Red Hat Society. Her social calendar often included lively games of Bunco at both Suntree Country Club and Wickham Senior Center.
Shirley cherished her time living at Chateau Madeleine over the past four years, where she participated in many activities and formed meaningful connections with fellow residents.
She also held a special fondness for holidays spent surrounded by loved ones.
Above all else, Shirley loved her family, deeply. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Tim Ferris (Linda); daughter, Lori Hillenbrand (Scott); son in law, Fred, three grandchildren - Rob Austin, Randy Austin and Hannah Ferris, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren—with a third expected this summer. Her warmth and devotion will continue to echo through generations.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Ferris; daughter, Patricia Rackow; parents, Bill and Ethel Dennie; brother, Bill; and sister, Beverly.
Shirley's affection extended to her canine companions—Natasha, Sammee, and Molly—who brought joy to her life over the years.
A memorial gathering to honor Shirley’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Suntree United Methodist Church, located at 7400 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne, Florida 32940. A reception will follow in the church dining room.
