Hugh came to Haines City in January of 1991 as the rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. A former U.S. Marine, Hugh quickly became actively involved in the Haines City Community. He served on the Board of Directors of Haines City Main Street, Chairman of Adjustment for the city, the pension board for the Police and Fireman’s Association, as well as the Board of Directors for the Heart of Florida Hospital. He was chaplain for Heart of Florida Hospital, the Bishop Gray Inn in Davenport and the Haines City Police Department. Hugh was actively involved in the Haines City Optimist Club and Rotary. He was a long-time supporter of many local charities including The Way Center. Father Hugh, as he was referred to by many, felt that the entire community was part of his congregation regardless of their faith. If someone needed assistance, he was there without reservation or judgement. He was a generous, caring and compassionate man who felt that it was his privilege to assist others. He was the living embodiment of what it means to be a humanitarian. Hugh rejoined the love of his life Lois knowing that he made the world a better place for so many in his quiet and unassuming way. He will truly be missed by his family, friends, and by all those who were privileged enough to have known him. Please pray for his family and friends.
