Doug Petty
September 7th, 1945 - April 22nd, 2025
The Firewood Man
William Douglas “Doug” Petty, born on September 7, 1945, in Denver, Colorado, peacefully passed away from multiple myeloma at the age of 79 on April 22, 2025, in the log home built by his father in 1937 in Evergreen.
Doug was the son of William M. Petty and Frances Carson Petty, who preceded him in death. As children, Doug and his younger sister Kathy, known as the “Petty Kids,” were inseparable, and they remained that way until the end of Doug's life when Kathy served as his caregiver.
Doug graduated from Evergreen High School in 1964 and was inducted into the U.S. Army in November 1965. He served as a field wireman (lineman) and earned the sharpshooter badge for the M-14 rifle. He also received several medals, including the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Overseas Bar, National Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart for valor and sacrifice. Doug was honorably discharged in November 1967.
After completing his military service, he worked in the construction industry and as a logger. Most of Doug's work involved logging in the surrounding area of Evergreen, where he was affectionately known as “The Firewood Man.” He continued his passion for working in the woods and cutting firewood until the age of 77.
Doug will be greatly missed by his sister, Kathy Petty, his friends and neighbors, and all those who relied on him for firewood.
Burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park (Veterans’ section) on May 6, 2025, at 1:00 PM. The address is:
Evergreen Memorial Park
26624 North Turkey Creek Rd
Evergreen, CO 80439 (303-674-7750)
Following the gravesite ceremony, a Celebration of Life will be held at “The Barn” at Evergreen Memorial Park.
